George S. Patton and he is indeed standing behind Pershing's left shoulder. Study the photo more closely - see the the buttoning on tunics & coat, notice the position of the ribbons on Pershing's tunic. The photo is wrongly printed, it is a mirror image of the original. The correct image is below. This group photo was obviously taken some time before the punitive expedition and the grin on Pershing's face indicates that Pancho Villa was still one of the good guys at that time.
